5 Underrated Anime Girls

I was asked to do a piece on anime girls and, while this is quite a broad topic, I found myself unable to come up with an idea that I liked enough to follow through on. My particular blogging niche is obscure and under-examined subjects, and there really isn’t a topic more examined and discussed in the otaku community than “anime girls.”

Last night, however, a thought came to me: How about I just talk about obscure and under-examined anime girls?

Brilliant! I’m so smart (and handsome and cool). So here it is: a list of 5 underrated anime girls that I personally like.

Number 5: Yuu Kashima from Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun

Despite her “princely” androgynous appearance and reputation throughout her school as a cool heartthrob, Kashima’s true personality is surprisingly ditzy and energetic, often leading to her involvement in comedic situations.

While her inclusion on this list is mainly due to her unconventional appearance, at least compared to other anime girls, her role as a foil and potential love interest to the much more serious and down-to-earth Masayuki Hori is an incredibly entertaining part of the series.

Number 4: Maekawa from Ground Control to Psychoelectric Girl

Speaking of weird tall anime girls, here’s another one for you. Maekawa doesn’t get as much screen time as the other (similarly weird) characters do, but she still did enough to leave an impression in my mind.

Personality-wise: she could be described as cool, yet quirky. She plays video games and likes teasing people. She also wears weird costumes for fun and gets dizzy when she raises her arms above her head for too long (should probably ask a specialist about that, because it doesn’t sound healthy).

All in all, she’s pretty neat, and she makes a really cute eggplant. Top-shelf anime girl.

Number 3: Mitsumine Shirayuki from Engaged to the Unidentified

Ah, motherhood. Truly the most difficult, yet most honorable profession in the world. It only gets more difficult, however, when you’re roughly four feet tall and have to raise two yokai babies while hiding their true forms from humans.

And that’s why the number 3 spot is dedicated to the hard-working mama Mitsumine Shirayuki, mother of Mashiro and Hakuya. She may have a small stature and love sweets, but she’s also probably a bajillion years old or something, so show some respect!

Number 2: Otako from Please Tell Me! Galko-chan

Galko-chan is in the title of the show (and the one with the big baps), but let’s not kid ourselves; Otako is, without a doubt, the best girl of the main trio. Not only does she have a cute, dorky appearance, complete with glasses (always a welcome addition to a character’s design) and messy hair, but she also has a dirty sense of humor, which often acts as a springboard for the show’s various gags.

As far as unconventionally cute characters go, Otako is one of my favorites, and she deserves more recognition, dang it! Also, we need more anime girls with glasses.

Number 1: Torpedo Woman from Bobobo-Bo Bo-Bobo

I mean... she’s a woman AND a torpedo. Do I even need to say more?

Hubba-hubba! Am I right, guys?

Closing

Anyway, that completes my dumb little list of underrated anime girls. Let me know what you thought on Twitter or Facebook (but only if you liked it. If you didn’t, just keep it to yourself. I don’t need that kind of negativity in my life).

As always, thanks for reading!
